THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

The 'trap' that he had previously fallen into with Remiel Calcifet and nikkari hect was now banoned, no longer housing the starving Celesteela and the young smaller ones that they had been trapped by. The mother laid dead, likely from starvation, as Callan, Nikolaj Volosenkov and Vanilla Kingsley passed through.

The vast, cavernous underwater network had previously been marked by the help of Nikkari's Pokemon spreading markers, which allowed for Callan, Nikolaj and Vanilla to be able to return without much difficulty. Bowie, Callan's Toxtricity, shone the way forward with its Spotlight as they continued to descend into wherever the cavern was going.

"Have either of you faced Ultra Beasts before?"

Nikolaj picked his way after Callan, his Excadrill at his side. "I have not," the older man admitted.[break][break]

Despite having lived in Hoenn for over twenty years, and despite being in the proximity of the defense of Littleroot Town last November, Nikolaj had not had the misfortune of battling an Ultra Beast. He was content keeping to his territory of Oldale and the Silent Icelands.[break][break]

Yet the recent call to investigate these "Wilds" at the latest Rangers meeting had stirred his curiosity. When Callan requested assistance exploring one called Ultra Crater, Nikolaj jumped on the opportunity to join.[break][break]

Call it a midlife crisis.[break][break]

He gazed upon the corpse of the Celesteela that lay across their path within the underground tunnels. "Is this one of them?" he asked, approaching it with caution.

Vanilla had been to this type of place before, although things were a lot more red compared to this time. The teen found herself in a more deserted place than before. Gone were any signs of spooky flora or anything, replaced entirely by...rocks. She came to be underground with some other League friends present. Neither of them looked too familiar, but once again, she was the youngest one out of all of them. She was beginning to wonder if no other kids her age were on such grand adventures like her. Although most other teenagers were busy at school than adventuring to such exotic locales like this one. Like always, Proxii was hovering about around her, the Rotom phone buzzing about as it searched around them while the white haired man asked the other two if they had experienced with an Ultra Beast before.

"Ah-I have." Vanilla answered. "When I was in the Ultra Space, I came across a nest of Nihilego. They were cool looking, aside from the poison, I would actually want to have one some day." Her Rotom, the ever hyper little ghost type he was, would pop in beside her, the phone screen showing the face of a Rotom as his digital wings flapped every now and again. "So maybe if we're lucky, we'll be able to find a new one here. I'm not seeing any nearby though."

They continued along as trio came across the body of something blocking their path. Vanilla walked closer, observing the still being. "What is that thing? Proxii!" she asked, while Proxii would hover before her. "One more for the ROtomDex, kekeke~" He'd scan over the entire section of whatever was in front of the before letting out a sharp chirp as the scan had completed. The screen folded out as he displayed the findings to the party as a soft, robotic voice droned out:

Celesteela, the Launch Pokémon. One kind of Ultra Beast. Witnesses have seen it burn down a forest by expelling gas from its two arms. Although it's alien to this world and a danger here, it's apparently a common organism in the world where it normally lives.

"So this is another one of the Ultra Beasts?" Vanilla asked, her eyebrows furrowed. "This thing looks like it's been here for a while. But are they all this size? This one seems really big."

"It is." Callan replied, simultaneously addressing both Nikolaj and Vanilla's questions.

"I'd say it's a bit larger than the average, but they can get much bigger."

Callan continued to walk down the the cavernous depths with the group, each step bringing them closer to the encroaching pitch black. Bowie grumbled, clearly disliking the idea of walking first. "You have the spotlight," Callan said to his Toxtricity's voiceless complaint. Bowie leaps on top of Callan's back and sticks its illuminating hand in front of his trainer. Callan suppresses a smile and folds his arms underneath his Toxtricity to piggyback it.

Eventually, the caverns stops, the running water flows into what seems to be a large, unnaturally constructed underwater lake. Light filters overhead, and as Callan looks up, the stars of the night sky were visible, seemingly amplified by some unknown force, giving the underwater lake visibility.

By the lakeside, a single stone bowl sat, filled with water. On the outside, the image of a large shell in a clear spiral pattern. By it's side, four other bowls laid with similar inscriptions upon it. "We should scout around for a bit." Callan mentioned. "I think this is a good place to stop and set up for the night."

Callan took out his phone and begun to snap images of the area. With any luck, they'll be able to figure out what the inscriptions meant.

Nikolaj gave one last, lingering look to the corpse of the Celesteela before following Callan and Vanilla down the tunnel. Eventually, they emerged into a wider space with a lake. With the stars hanging overhead, it appeared like a great hand had scooped out a crater in the ground.[break][break]

The older man nodded at Callan, agreeing with his decision. "I'll check for any dangers and set up some traps to defend us while we sleep," he offered.[break][break]

With his Excadrill, Nikolaj set off to examine the area's perimeter. Decades as a Ranger helped him navigate the rocky terrain. It was his keen eye for trouble — developed in his youth while working for Team Rocket — that helped him spot the perfect place to set up traps, however.[break][break]

Using a sticky glob, he covered the approach that left them most vulnerable. Satisfied, he headed back to the edge of the lake where the stone bowls were gathered. Their presence was too unnatural to ignore.[break][break]

"What do you think these are meant to be for? Offering bowls?" Nikolaj wondered aloud to his nearby companions.[break][break]

Grandmothers in Sinnoh sometimes put cups of milk or cream on the windowsills for ancient spirits or their ancestors. Perhaps this setup was similar.

Vanilla followed close by Callan and Nikolaj, although her attention was currently on the deceased Pokémon around them. Still, she didn't want to hold up the group and would move further downwards with Callan's Toxtricity. She quickly scanned the Pokemon walking at the front of the group as Proxii would show her the results of said scan. Toxtricity was always a funny little frog Pokemon, and she did want one of her own, but something about the electricity coming form its chest always spooked her. Biscotti would definitely already have one by now, though! After some time of wandering inside of the tunnel leads into an open clearing. A Waterfall stands before them with the smaller of the three peaking out, maybe even close enough to step off the cliff if it hadn't been for Proxii yanking her back.

"This is amazing..." she said to herself. "It's hard to imagine that some place like this exists..."

The group came across a bowl with inscriptions on it of some kind, although Vanilla certainly wasn't going to have anything worthwhile to suggest. This was some kind of strange oddity, and as far as she knew, these bowls were just weird, awkwardly placed bowls. Callan came up with the idea to bunker down for the night and to spread out to see if they could find something. Nikolaj had spoken up about placing some defenses for them as Vanilla grew curious about his history of traps. Was he a soldier of some kind? It didn't seem like any type of thing a person outside of a warzone would have much experience in. Still, she didn't push him to answer. Secrets were secrets, after all. Although his words did seem to spring something inside of Vanilla's noggin.

"You're right. They do look like they should have something inside to offer them." she observed plainly. "But if they were for offering things, who were they for? And what was going to go in them?"

She'd say nothing and just think for a moment, then looking to Nikolaj. "Speaking of offerings, we should probably eat soon if we're staying here for a while. I can cook us something if we find anything edible. Unless you like Pokemon food."

Toxtricity, the Punk Pokémon. When this Pokémon sounds as if it's strumming a guitar, it's actually clawing at the protrusions on its chest to generate electricity over 15,000 volts. This short-tempered and aggressive Pokémon chugs stagnant water to absorb any toxins it might contain. Many youths admire the way this Pokémon listlessly picks fights and keeps its cool no matter what opponent it faces.

Nikolaj and his Excadrill had wasted no time in securing the area, traps laid out showed years of experience. Callan nodded in acknowledgement, his gaze drifting to the stone bowls nearby.

His fingers traced over them, as if trying to learn the meaning through touch. Callan's finger runs against his temple, Nikolaj could be right. His own thought was a little more morbid. "Or a sacrifice," he mused aloud, adding an unsettling edge to Nikolaj's theory.

Bowie worked alongside Vanilla to set up the remainder of the camp. Vanilla's offer to cook formed a grin from Callan, the thought of a homecooked meal far more enticing than their pre-packaged alternatives. And they'd been moving the entire day, he was getting pretty hungry.

"Sounds great, it's better than eating the MREs," he concurred, his stomach already anticipating the comfort of a warm pot of curry.

He turned back to the bowls. "This is what I suggest," he began, pausing only to ensure he had their attention. "I'm going to send the images to Evergrande. Maybe they'll have some answers." The doubt was clear in his voice, but the plan was their best shot at deciphering the cryptic symbols.

"That might take a while though, so I guess dinner sounds good," he concluded, gesturing to the Porygon-Z already busy transmitting data. Its ability to send information extradimensionally was nothing short of a miracle, particularly on these world-hopping expeditions.

With their tasks laid out, Callan moved to finish setting up camp. His sends out Futaba, his Porygon-Z, and links it to his Rotom =-phone as it begins to hum and send the data in bits. Data transfer across dimensions, unsurprisingly, was quite slow. And so they'd have to wait here for a while.

Setting down some long-burning tinder, Callan uses his knife to spark the Grit dust within, sparking a campfire. The heat radiated against his skin as he stared against it, seating hismelf down and opening his rucksack to pull out the largest, and only, luxury item he had inside of it.

"So, where are you both from?" he asked, his gaze flicking between Nikolaj and Vanilla. "I know Nikolaj, from the Ranger Meetings, you're new to me though Vanilla. What made you two interested in the expeditions?"

A sacrifice.[break][break]

Nikolaj pondered Callan's words even as Vanilla suggested cooking up a hearty meal. The older man gave the girl an absent nod.[break][break]

"Use some of that boost mulch we brought," he suggested. "Apparently it can make plants grow, and I saw plenty of non-poisonous mushrooms as I was walking around."[break][break]

He turned back to the bowls, crouching down before them. The symbols engraved on them were meaningless to him, though one looked familiar.[break][break]

Removing a chunk of mysterious red ore from his pocket, he compared it to the etching. They were identical.[break][break]

From somewhere behind him, Nikolaj heard Callan speaking.[break][break]

"I'm from Oldale," the grizzled Ranger replied, more for Vanilla's benefit than Callan's. After all, both men had been at the latest Rangers meeting. "And I've been curious to know what's out here."[break][break]

Slowly, carefully, Nikolaj placed the ore into the corresponding bowl. Nothing happened at first, but then their surroundings began to brighten — not with any artificial light, not due to Callan's campfire, but from something above them.[break][break]

Nikolaj looked up and nearly gasped. A full moon had suddenly appeared, pale and swollen against the night sky.[break][break]

He placed his hands on his hips. "Well, would you look at that."

She couldn't say that she wasn't enjoying herself, as Vanilla had to wonder what her brother might have been doing. Hopefully staying out of trouble given his condition. It was strange that somebody with an inability to feel pain would be babies by somebody who was younger than him, but he had a good head on his shoulders at least. Once her and Bowie had finished working on the camp, both men appeared to be supportive of her offer of a cooked meal. She got the feeling that both tended to live off of those MREs when out and about.

One of the perks of growing up in a household known for such.

"Right. I'll make something to make you start taking me on more of these adventures." Vanilla said, beginning to leave before Nikolaj mentioned the boost soil. Her eyes went to go towards the boost much, a bag that was resting in camp. Seems simple enough to use. She smiled and grabbed a hold of it before taking off with Proxii behind her.

She wandered about, stumbling across all sorts of herbs and the aftermentioned mushrooms while applying the boost mulch to each in turn. Like the name implied, their growth accelerated before her very eyes! It was a fascinating phenomenon, one that she had to wonder if she could take some home to Galar and try to grow more stuff with it. She'd collect the harvestable ingredients and continue on. Proxii flickered above, holding an open bag she could throw stuff into. After about a five minute walk, Vanilla had managed to fill it with all she would need. The two returned home to camp while she'd grin at both men.

"Who's in the mood for curry?"

When the fireplace was lit, Vanilla got to work in an instant. Knives chopped up the vegetables and mushrooms as she worked hard. The other two continued to observe the bowls and the like as she worked fiercely. She knew her way around a kitchen, even if it wasn't exactly putting cookies into an oven. Callan asked about her and what interested her about the wilds, a pretty expected question. Vanilla had heard it before and practically rehearsed it seven time over by now.

"I'm from Galar. I came to Hoenn to search for my father, Harold Kingsley. He was a Ranger that
served in Hoenn before retiring when he met my mother and moved over there. When i was born, he left for whatever reason and never came back. So I'm trying to find him. I've tried searching all over, but haven't had any luck. This is one of the last few places I haven't looked yet, and Im running out of places to look…But I know he has to be out there. And I'm going to find him, one way or another."

As she worked, Vanilla would chime in about the bowls. "They obviously have to hold something or other. Do we have anything that could-"

She trailed off as the air above them grew bright. Despite being underground, the moon would shine fiercely above the three. "That's the moon! But it isn't, right? So why would they need to make an artificial one?" The fire continued to roar while Vanilla sat the completed pan full of curry on top, watching it cook as she began to stir, turn and tend to their meal. Such delicious scents wafted up from the pan while the little chef continued her hard work. "Dinner should be ready in about five minutes."

Callan sat cross-legged, the whine of a zipper breaking the air as he reached into his rucksack. His hands cradled an electric travel guitar, its surface scarred by countless melodies. His fingertips began their familiar dance along the frets of an old song.

"I remember," he murmured, his words joining the song woven by his deft fingers. "You and your daughter were at the Ranger's meeting." An echo of a smile flickered and died on his lips, a ghost of warmth in the stark lamplight.

The rhythm faltered, missed notes marking Vanilla's revelation like skips in a vinyl record as she mentions her missing father. He continues to play as his lips purse, just barely. "I hope you find him," Callan's replied.

His focus was stolen by an abrupt bloom of light, guitar strings vibrating under his sudden grip. His gaze darted upward, breath hitching as Nikolaj placed the red ore into a bowl.

The ore transformed into a jeweled branch.

"Holy shit."

Callan's eyes darted between the moon above and the stone bowls below, the wheels in his mind spinning. He places his guitar aside as he walks towards the bowls.

"There is a story," he began. "Called the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Where five suitors are asked to perform five impossible tasks for some princess they're down bad for." His hand motioned towards the bowl Nikolaj had activated. "A jeweled branch."

With a contemplative hum, he picked up a napkin, placing it onto a bowl marked with a robe symbol. As the napkin was placed, a brilliant glow of crystal flowed over its tissue body, and twisted, the crystalling fractures growing it it longer, creating brilliant red fur in place of tissue: "A robe of fire rats."

Stone after stone placed in each of the bowls brought forth more mythical items, "A dragon's jewel." Each time, the stone he picked up and placed into a bowl glowed in brilliant, crystalline light, and then morphed into the object before him.

Callan then finally puts the final stone, which transforms into a conch shell, "A Cowrie Shell of Swallows."

Callan turns towards Nikolaj. "They didn't require offerings. They made offerings. We were both wrong." He chuckles.

But there was something more. More to the story.

"We're missing one offering," Callan murmured, retreating to the campfire as the scent of curry wafted through the air. His mind was far from the meal, consumed by the enigma of the last offering - the Elixir of Life. But he needed to eat, regardless. "Let's think on it more, I'm hungry."

As the trainers ate under the watchful eye of the artificial moon, the world around them changed.

Water receded into the lake, a gaping maw opening. From this chasm, a Celesteela, its towering form casting an ominous shadow, rose from its depths. It was the size of a skyscrape, it's head just managing to dip underneath the hole above, the light is eclipsed by its massive shadow. The celestial Pokémon extended its arms towards the moon, the four offerings floating upwards to be accepted into its body before it turns to the trainers, smiling expectantly.

"It's looking for the Elixir of Life," Callan said, his voice steady despite the ripple of tension running through his muscles. His eyes roved the cavern, scouring for any clue to the final bowl. But no matter where he looked, there were only four. "Any ideas?" He asks the other two.

"Curry sounds great. Thank you, Vanilla."[break][break]

The notes of Callan's guitar filled the air, prompting Nikolaj to raise an eyebrow. He had heard some passing comment or other that the silver-haired man was a musician of some kind, but Nikolaj was not a fan of current music. His preference were the vinyl records he and his wife had collected over the years, some having arrived with them from Sinnoh.[break][break]

But he said nothing. He simply nodded at Callan's observation from the Rangers meeting and again in agreement with Callan's sentiment to Vanilla's story.[break][break]

When the Celesteela appeared in the earthen crater that had once been the lake, Nikolaj frowned. There had, in fact, been five bowls, one of which was filled with water. He picked it up, careful not to slosh the liquid.[break][break]

"You mean this?" he asked before turning to the massive Pokémon and extending the bowl, as if in tribute.

Vanilla smiled a bit at Callan as he wished her luck, although he could see that she had been worn down over her many searches. Still, there was some hint of hope in her hazel eyes, begging for a sign of any kind. "Thanks. I haven't anything yet, but he has to be somewhere..." The tone of a teenager that was slowly approaching her wit's end and losing options for what would happen next. She'd continue tending to the curry pan before the moon overhead caught the attention of Callan and Nikolaj, the former of which chiming in about a story of some kind. Vanilla listened to it intently as she'd track along. He began to set things aside in a bowl, one by one, placing each in its respective place.

But just as he would end his tale, a maw at the opening of the lake would cause the ground to shake. From down below, a shape was slowly beginning to raise above the lake. It caused Vanilla to gasp, pointing at the massive Celesteela that had its body rising from the watery depths. "That's a big Celesteela." she said, looking over to the other two while it hovered before them. It looked expectantly at Callan, while Vanilla looked over to Nikolaj and then the man in question. "But why isn't it attacking us? Wait, Elixir of Life?" she asked. "I don't know. You're the one who knows the story. I don't know anything. What about you, Nikolaj?"

The older man had wandered over to some of the water inside the bowls and scooped some up. He seemed to have the hints of an idea, although Vanilla was still nervous about what this thing had planned after it got what it wanted. He extended the bowl towards the Celesteela as she then glanced to Callan in hopes of an answer. "So what happened after it gets everything it wants?"

Callan's eyes wander to Nikolaj for a brief moment as he reaches into the lake to pick up a bowl that had been filled with water.

Water, was the elixir of life.

As Nikolaj rose it into the air, the Celesteela peers towards it, but doesn't move, seemingly waiting for something else. Callan pauses as Vanilla asks her question.

"The tale ends with the princess flying towards the moon." Callan paused as he begins to piece it together. "This ritual is to have the Celesteela grant us access towards it." As to waht that entailed, he had no idea. What was on the moon? Would they be in danger? Why was there a ritual that was given for such travels?

Still, the problem of the water remained the same. Callan pieces back every item that they had once taken and transformed into a different item.

The idea clicks into his head.

Taking out his Tera Orb, Callan tosses it towards the bowl of water in a hail Arceus attempt. The orb glows, visibly as the water within the bowl crystallizes, refracting the brilliance of its light and transforming itself from clear liquid into a shimmering, aquamarine hue. The Celesteela nods and hums, as the bowl is lifted into the air and then, as with the other objects, absorbed into its body.

A ringing sound, like a clear bell, could be heard as the Celesteela begins to glow a light green. It extends an arm down, a modified bamboo chute the size of a tower, to allow the three of them to enter into it. Callan cautiously returns all of his Pokemon, slinging his guitar on his back and grabbing his bag. "We should try boarding."
